Founded in October 1993, Castart Studios Ltd. of Saanichton, B.C. has experienced tremendous growth selling all over North America. They are considered innovative leaders in the casting industry, producing original designed sculpture, birdbaths, water features, planters and wall art for home and garden use.
Their products are suitable for outdoor use, made from proprietary blends of concrete and having unique weather resistant finishes applied. Castart Studios work with a number of talented artists and produce new pieces on an ongoing basis. Most of the pieces are copyrighted and only available through Castart. A weather-proof descriptive card, detailing the piece and providing an artist biography, accompanies the pieces.
Castart outdoor pieces are cast in a stained grey cement and aggregate mix or an off-white cement and crushed marble mix.
In order to produce a top-quality concrete that will not break down in the winter, two additives are used:
A) Air Entraining: This puts microscopic bubbles in the concrete that contract and expand during the freeze/thaw cycle, and
B) Water Reducing Plasticizers: Less water in the mix means a higher strength.
Castart concrete can stay outside all year round, although bowls, fountains, and statues that collect water will crack when said water freezes and expands (true of all concrete). Their products have been exposed to the harsh conditions of the Canadian prairie's winters for some years now, without any significant problems.
