SHRUBS

From April through October the nursery is full of trees and shrubs to complete any landscape project. We offer a selection of shrubs for common or unique situations; of all shapes and sizes, including many new, unusual varieties and some of the older proven ones, including many varieties of:

ANGELICA TREE

DEVIL'S WALKING STICK/ JAPANESE ANGELICA TREE- 4.5m high, 3.5m wide. Upright. a large shrub or tree usually with spiny stems. Large white flowers in August and September. Purple-black fruit and dark green foliage. Soes well in city conditions and dry soils.

ARALIA

FIVELEAF ARALIA- 2.5m high, 2.5m wide. Erect, Oval. One of the best shrubs for heavily shaded areas; easily withstands poor soil, urban air pollution and windy conditions. Foliage glossy, deeply cut and covered with prickles on the underside. Makes an ideal privacy hedge and barrier.
VARIEGATED FIVELEAF ARALIA- 1.5m high, 1.5m wide. Erect, Round. Glossy green leaves with irregular cream margins are sometimes completely creamy-yellow. An upright growing unfavourable conditions and with its throns it makes a good screen.

CHOKEBERRY

BLACK CHOKEBERRY- 6m high, 3m wide. Oval, Upright. Upright shrub when young, but more arching as it matures. White flowers with purplish-black fruit and a red fall colour. Native.
RED CHOKEBERRY- 2m high, 1.5m wide. Upright, Rounded. Fragrant white flowers in May produce glossy red berries that are retained for a long period of time. Shiny green foliage turns to an outstanding red colour. Attracts birds and does well in mosit or well drained soil.

BARBERRY

CONCORDE BARBERRY- 50cm high, 50cm wide. Upright. Dwarf upright form with deep purple, velvety foliage. A rust free variety with yellow flowers and bright red fruit.
CHERRY BOMB BARBERRY- 1.25m high, 1.25m wide. Rounded. Compact branches make a low hedge, barrier or single shrub accent. Bright red berries last into the winter. Crimson colouring to the foliage. Slow growth.
EMERALD CAROUSEL BARBERRY- 1.25m high, 1.25m wide. Rounded. Deep green foliage turns to an outstanding red to reddish-purple early in the fall and remains colourful well into the season. Hardy and flowers and fruits well. Has a rounded shape with arching branches.
GOLDEN NUGGET BARBERRY- 30cm high, 50cm wide. Folden foliage with an orange glow on the leaf tips that lasts throughout the season. Prefers full sun for best colour.
ROSE GLOW BARBERRY- 1m high, 80cm wide. Rounded, Compact. New growth is bright pink that turns to a mottled silver-pink to rose and eventually deep maroon. Notable fall colour of red. Has a yellow flower.
ROYAL BURGUNDY BARBERRY- 60cm high, 60cm wide. Upright. Velvety burgundy-purple foliage, slightly a little more compact. Foliage turns black-red in the fall.
RUBY CAROUSEL BARBERRY- 1m high, 1m wide. Low, Rounded. This plant has reddish-purple foliage and uniform habit. Low, rounded shape can be used as a accent, hedge or barrier plant because of its thorns. Red berries thru the winter. It prefers a moist, well drained soil.
SUNSATION BARBERRY- 1.25m high, 1.25m wide. Upright. A golden Barberry is an compact form. Golden foliage with an orange cast most of the season. This plant will add a vivid contrast to the garden especially when mixed with dark green evergreens.

BEAUTY BUSH

BEAUTYBERRY- 2m high, 2m wide. An accent plant valued for its display of abundant clusters oflong lasting violet berries along the branches in the fall. Berries appear even at a young age. Has bronze-purple new growth followed by dark green foliage. Prune to encourage new growth.
EARLY AMETHYST BEAUTYBERRY- 1.25m high, 2m wide. Rounded. A rounded bushy habit with arching branches. Small lavender-pink blooms appear in the summer months followed by distinctive bright purple berries that ripen in September and remain until November.

BUTTERFLY BUSH

BUTTERFLY BUSH/ SUMMER LILAC- 1.5m high, 1.2m wide. Upright. Valued for summer flowering to attract butterflies it is easily transplanted. Attractive, long racemes of flowers appear in a bright mixture of colours to suit any palatte. A long lasting shrub for border plantings.

BURNING BUSH

DWARF BURNING BUSH- 1.2m high, 1.2m wide. Rounded. A dwarf compact variety. Good for a low headge. Rounded shape with green foliage and outstanding red fall colour.

CARYOPTERIS

DARK KNIGHT BLUEBEARD- 60cm high, 60cm wide. Mounded. Silvery-gray aromatic foliage with clusters of small fuffy blue flowers in August- September. Low mounding shrub that should be cut back in the winter. Will tolerate dry situations. Attracts hummingbirds.
SUNSHINE BLUE BLUEBEARD- 1m high, 1m wide. Bright sunny yellow foliage is coved with rich amethyst-blue flowers. The foliage ages to a yellow-lime and maintains its colour all season long. Dense, moundinghabit and bright foliage makes it ideal for adding season-long colour to landscape beds.

COTONEASTER

PEKING COTONEASTER- 2.7m high, 1.5m wide. Broadly, Spreading. Dark shiny green foliage that turns to a orange-red in the fall. Whitish-pink flowers produces a black fruit.
SPREADING COTONEASTER- 1.7m high, 1.7m wide. Spreading, Rounded. Shiny green leaves that turn red in the fall. Bears pink flowers in May followed by red fruit that holds well into the winter.

DOGWOOD

CHINESE FLOWERING DOGWOOD- 7m high, 5m wide. Broad, Vase-shaped. White pionted bracts that appears in the spring. Its bark exfoliates, creating a blend of gray, tan and brown. In the fall, the bark turns reddish-purple and displays large pink-red fruit.
GRAY DOGWOOD- 4m high, 1m wide. Rounded. Distinct grey bark, multi-stemmed with white flowers in May. Native.
IVORY HALO DOGWOOD- 1.75m high, 1.75m wide. A compact form with more delicately textured foliage than other species. Dark red winter twigs and blue-white berries. Useful for smaller planting areas.
PAGODA DOGWOOD- 5m high, 7m wide. Rounded, Horizontal branching. Native shrub, with horizontally layed branches. It has interesting clusters of creamy white flowers, followed by dark blue berries.
PINK FLOWERING DOGWOOD- 8m high, 8m wide. Rounded. A very popular small tree covered with a mass of rosy-pink bracts in the spring before leaves appear. The young foliage is reddish, than to green in the summer ad=nd red in the fall.
RED OSIER DOGWOOD- 2.5m high, 3m wide. Spreading. Vigorous growth rate, good for mass planting. Good red fall colour. Red stem as well. Native.
SILKY DOGWOOD- 2.5m high, 2.5m wide. Rounded. Young branches are reddish-purple, older are brownish- purple. Flowers are yellowish- white and produce blue fruit with white blotches. Birds are attracted to the fruit.
SILVER EDGE DOGWOOD- 1.5m high, 1.2m wide. Erect, Rounded. Variegated foliage and interesting purplish- red branches that brings year round interest to the garden. It will produce small fragrant flowers in the spring and then during the summer. Fall colour is apricot, gold and rosy-red.
WHITE FLOWERING DOGWOOD- 8m high, 8m wide. Rounded. A native variety covered with showy white flower bracts in May. Red fruit appears in the fall along with brilliant red foliage. Develops full, broadly rounded crowns.

EASTERN REDBUD

EASTERN REDBUD- 3.5m high, 8m wide. Open, Spreading. Attractive shrub fr any garden. Covered in delicate reddish-pink, pea-shaped flowers which appear before foliage. Heart-shaped blue-green leaves turn to golden-yellow in the fall.

FORSYTHIA

SHOWY FORSYTHIA- 2.5m high, 2.5m wide. Upright. Masses of yellow flowers in the spring. It is fast growing and will make a good dense hedge or specimen plant.

HAZEL

CORKSCREW HAZEL- 2.5m high, 2.5m wide. Rounded. An unusual shrub with distinct erect twisted branches. Very effective against the winter snow. Yellow catkins appear in February. Green foliage on an upright, spreading habit.
RED MAJESTIC HAZEL- 2m high, 1m wide. Contorted. Contorted corkscrew brancheds with large purple, textured leaves. Unique leaves give addred interest thoughtout the growing season.

MAPLE

AMUR MAPLE- 5m high, 5m wide. Rounded. Hardy, dwarf Maple makes an excellent tree or shrub of compact form. It has slender branchesm and glossy green leaves through the summer and brilliant scarlet in the fall. Produces red keys. Adaptable to many soil types.
BLOODGOOD JAPANESE MAPLE- 6m high, 5m wide. Rounded, Upright. The best purplish-red Japanese Maole, holding its deep colour well throughout the summer. Leaves somewaht larger than those of the purple form. Small tree for lawns or patios or even entryways.
CORAL BARK JAPANESE MAPLE- 6m high, 5m wide. Upright and Upright Spreading. The Coral Bark Maple is a popular tree with beautiful yellow-green leaves, tinged with red in spring. Later in fall, the leaves turn shades of apricot and gold. The bright, coral-red bark is its most outstanding feature during the winter season. Young branches, two years old or less, possess the bright colour, while the mature branches fade back into the landscape.
CRIMSON QUEEN JAPANESE MAPLE- 1.75m high, 1.75m wide. Broad, Mounding. A laceleaf selection with extremely finely cut leaves. Retains its colour well during the summer. Low branching tree with a weeping form. Suitable for small lawn or in patio gardens.
CUTLEAF JAPANESE MAPLE- 2m high, 3m wide. An incredibly artisitc accent plant for the garden, featuring lacy foliage that emerges a beautifull crimson-red and fades to a purple-green in summer, turning stunning fiery shades of colour in fall; best planted in a sheltered location.
FLAME MAPLE- 7m high, 7m wide. Rounded. An oval to rounded tree that is extremely hardy as a small tree or shrub well known for its fall colour. Fragrant white flowers in the summer followed by red, winged fruit. Tolerant of urban conditions.
GOLDEN FULL MOON MAPLE- 6m high, 6m wide. Upright. A slow growing Maple with beautiful yellow-green foliage throughout the summer and turning orange-red in the fall. It has prominent red flowers and seeds. Likes dappled shade so it will not scorch in the afternoon sun. Use for an excellent focal point for shade garden.
GREEN CUTLEAF JAPANESE MAPLE- 2m high, 2-3m wide. Upright, Oval. Bight green leafed Maple with 7 to 9 lobed leaves. Foliage changes from dark green to a vibriant golden orange in the fall. excellent choice for a small garden, or patio tree.
GREEN DRAGON JAPANESE MAPLE- 3m high, 2m wide. Vase Shaped. This wonderful tree possesses fine ferny foliage in a lovely green and turns a brilliant scarlet in fall' unusual and rare. Makeing this a great choice for a solitary accent in the garden.
INABA SHIRDARE JAPANESE MAPLE- 1.5m high, 2.5m wide. Round and Full. Among the best of the weeping red laceleaf maples. It retains its colour well during the summer, is scorch resistant, grows vigorously and is hardy. Always popular and an attractive small tree.
JAPANESE MAPLE- 6m high, 5m wide. Upright. An excellent plant for the garden providing an artisitc touch in a wide range of uses. Best planted in well drained soils with high organic matter. Light green leaves in the summer and from yellow to orange in the fall. Likes protection from drying winds.
PAPERBARK MAPLE- 7m high, 5m wide. Upright. One of the most distinct and ornamental of the Maples. It is noted for its sinnamon-brown bark that exfoliates in paper-thin strips like Birches. Slow growing species tree. Fall colour is bronze-russet-red. Has long woody nutlets. Insect resistant.
RIBBONLEAF JAPANESE MAPLE- 6m high, 4m wide. A compact beautifull shaped small tree or shrub with brilliant purplish- red foliage. Splendid as a lawn specimen or in a shrubbery border. Adds colour throughout the season.

AUTUMN BRILLIANCE SERVICEBERRY- 8m high, 5m wide. Upright, Irregular. Vigorous grower with soft, white flowers in the spring, followed by edible purplish- black fruit. Leaves emerge bronze maturing to blue-green to green turning orange and red in the fall.
DOWNY/SHADBLOW SERVICEBERRY- 6m high, 3m wide. Upright, Oval. Upright native shrub with white flowers in the spring, blue-purple fruit in the summer and red- yellow fall colour. Brisd are attracted to the edible fruit.
JUNEBERRY- 10m high, 5m wide. Upright. White flowers are produced in loose clusters in early spring, followed by purplish- black fruit in the summer that is sweet and juicy. It is native to eastern Canada. Green foliage turns yellow to red in the fall.

SMOKETREE

GOLDEN SPIRIT SMOKE BUSH- 2.5m high, 1.75m wide. Golden-yellow foliage that lasts thru the summer and then turns to vivid hues of orange-red and coral in the fall. Has an abundance of light pink flower heads on long plumes and a broadly upright habit. Prefers a well-drained soil.
ROYAL PURPLE SMOKE BUSH- 2.5m high, 2.5m wide. Upright, Spreading. Produces flowers in the summer large, long lasting pinkish airy clusters that 'smoke' on the tree. Purplish coloured leaves turn red in the fall.
YOUNG LADY SMAOKE BUSH- 2.5m high, 2.5m wide. Open Spreading. Lots of blooms even when it is a yound plant hence the name. Nearly every shoot forms soft pink flowers and blooms from late spring until frost. Green foliage turns to a blend of yellow, orange and red in the fall.

HUMMINGBIRD SUMMERSWEET- 80cm high, 1m wide. Rounded. A dwarf compact rounded shrub with 10cm long fragrant flowers that cover this plant for many weeks. Glossy green foliage turns pale yellow in the fall.
PINK SPIRES SUMMERSWEET- 1.5m high, 1.2m wide. Upright, Mounded. Blooming in late summer this variety has rose-pink buds opening to fragrant, non fading pink flowers.
RUBY SPICE SUMMERSWEET- 2m high, 1.2m wide. Upright. Flowers are a rich pink and very fragrant. Blooms attract butterflies. Dark green foliage and yellow fall colour. Tolerant of partial shade and adaptable to wet sites.

JAPANESE FLOWERING QUINCE- 1.2m high, 1.2m wide. Mounding. Vivid coloured clusters of orange-red flowers and fragrant fruit are characteristic to this plant. Dense bushy growth and glossy green dense foliage.
RED FLOWERING QUINCE- 1.5m high, 1.5m wide. Rounded. Large crimson bowl-shaped blooms in early spring followed by yellow-green fruit in the fall that can be used in preserves and jellies.
